A few months ago, the Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special had set the Nurburgring lap record for sedans and Subaru chose to keep the video to itself until recently.
Back in July, the Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special had claimed the record for the fastest sedan around the Nurburgring. With a sub-7-minute lap time of 6:57.5, the specially-built car posted a better lap time than the
Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce which is the 6th fastest production car around the Ring. That must’ve hurt some of the Lambo fans out there. Relax. You boys will be having the last laugh. Read on.
Subaru had made multiple attempts at the Nurburgring Nordschleife race track with the Subaru WRX STI to score a lap time which can get them to sell more copies of the WRX STI. But torrential rains played spoilsport. Eventually, the sports sedan was cut loose on the track with Le Mans driver Richie Stanaway behind the wheel. He didn’t disappoint a bit, as the Kiwi brought home the trophy of the fastest four-door car around the Green Hell track.
While the lap time is one which Subaru fans would love to brag about, we’d recommend that they be reminded of the catch here. The Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special isn’t a production-spec car. The manufacturer got it custom-built by Prodrive with the sole purpose of showcasing the strengths of the donor car – the 2017 Subaru WRX STI – and the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
The time attack car is a heavily-modified, purpose-built track weapon with more than 600 hp of power churned out by the tuned 2.0-liter Subaru WRC-spec boxer motor, full roll cage, 9-inch wide slicks, WRC gearbox with an automatic clutch and paddle shifters, stripped-out interior, upgraded suspension and an advanced aero package which lets the driver adjust the rear spoiler via steering-mounted controls. That’s everything you’ll need to shatter lap records and not the kind of features list that you’d want when you drive out of the track.
In short, the record for the fastest production sedan still around the Nurburgring still belongs to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (7:32.00) and the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce (6:59.73) continues to be the 6th fastest production car around the Ring.
